Places of worship across the world often have certain rules and dress codes that are meant to be followed by everyone, irrespective of gender or age. These guidelines are seen as a way to maintain sanctity and respect in a sacred space. In India too, many temples expect visitors to dress modestly as a sign of reverence.
Recently, a video from a temple went viral where a woman was stopped at the entrance for wearing shorts. What followed was a heated argument between her, the temple priest, and police officials.

The video, recorded by another woman, showed the visitor raising her voice at both a female police officer and the priest. At one point, she told the officer that she wasn’t going to “listen to anyone” and that the police needed to “learn how to talk to people.” The tense situation quickly drew attention, with bystanders watching as the argument unfolded.
“She has worn shorts to a temple and is now fighting with the priest and police, claiming she is right in doing so. The police are right in denying her entry,” the woman recording the video is heard saying.

The clip, once shared online, sparked widespread discussion. While some people questioned whether denying entry was the right approach, the majority felt that the woman should have followed the temple’s dress code without creating a scene.
Many pointed out that such guidelines are not new, but have always been a part of temple tradition, and choosing to ignore them only disrupts the peaceful environment of the place.
Here’s what some people had to say:

Incidents like this remind us that every place, whether it’s a temple, mosque, church, or gurdwara, comes with its own set of rules. One may or may not agree with them, but respecting those rules is part of respecting the space itself.
