In front of foreign and expensive breeds, Indie dogs do not receive their due recognition for their ability to sense danger and fierce protective instincts. Nowadays, Indie dogs are being inducted into the police force for their guarding traits. Proof of their protective character trait has been found in an incident that took place in Vasai’s Tungareshwar Gali in Maharashtra, where the barking of a stray dog helped prevent a crime.
In the early hours of June 30, at around 1.30 am, a 32-year-old accountant was walking home from Vasai station when she was attacked by 35-year-old Sandeep Khot.

Khot, who is about seven feet tall, approached her from behind, pushed her to the ground, and threatened to rape her, reported Mid-Day.
He gagged her mouth to stop her from screaming and began making inappropriate advances, including trying to touch her down her pants.
However, a nearby stray dog started barking at Khot, startling him and causing him to lose his grip on the woman.

Taking advantage of the situation, the woman managed to push him away and ran towards the main road, although Khot fled with her iPhone.
The woman later recounted her ordeal to the police. The Manikpur police station quickly responded to the incident. Police inspector Raju Mane said they registered a case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and started an investigation. Although CCTV footage from a nearby shop was inconclusive due to darkness, the police managed to trace and arrest Khot within 24 hours.
Khot, who has a history of posing as a police officer and committing fraud, was recently released from jail after serving a three-year sentence. He was arrested and taken into custody, with further investigations revealing he had thrown the stolen iPhone into a drain.

In several neighbourhoods across the country, people complain about stray dogs and how they disrupt the peace and safety of their surroundings. There have been several cases of ruthless stray dog killings. However, this incident goes on to show the vital role that stray dogs can play in our communities.
