Waking up in Mumbai during the 10 days of Ganesh Chaturthi is a surreal experience in itself! With vibrance and hue of colours everywhere the eye can see, it is almost impossible for a non-Mumbaikar to miss the incredible spirit of the city and fervour with which it celebrates Bappa!
The day Bappa leaves, typically the 10th day, also known as Visarjan…people in multitude gather and immerse big and beautiful Ganesh idols in water. While the celebration is unlike anything you’ll ever see, the damage the POP idols do to the oceans, perennial rivers, and aquatic life is also an indescribable sight.
Afroz Shah and his neighbour Harbansh Mathur began the task of cleaning Mumbai’s Versova Beach in 2015 and today, they have changed the face of the beach altogether. Joined by many, Versova Beach saw one of its biggest clean-up missions after Ganpati Visarjan on Sept 6.

Actor Randeep Hooda also joined hands and helped restore beaches by cleaning up toxic waste.

Draped in an orange turban, Hooda did not shy away from getting his hands dirty.
