If you live in a housing society, there’s an unspoken rule that makes life smoother for everyone – respect shared spaces and your neighbours’ rights. Whether it’s using common areas responsibly, following parking rules, or simply keeping noise under control, a basic level of decorum ensures harmony.
However, in Pune, a resident found themselves in just such a situation when their designated parking space was taken over by a committee member of their very own society. The member had organised a birthday celebration for his niece, and instead of choosing a community hall or another suitable place, he set up tables, chairs, and even a buffet spread in the resident’s allotted spot.
What made matters worse was the response when the resident confronted him. Instead of apologising or offering a solution, the committee member reportedly told them to park their car outside the society gate and their scooter in another neighbour’s space. The incident was captured on video by the resident, who later shared it online, sparking a debate on what steps one can take in such cases.
“My society committee member organised his niece birthday and didn’t even inform me about this event which in my parking. I went to confront him and he instead of asking me politely orders me park my car outside the gate and scooty in someone else’s parking. What actions can I take against him? plz help Also he is a non-maharashtrian,” the resident took to Reddit’s r/pune subreddit to share.

Many pointed out that parking spaces are usually allotted under society rules, and no one has the right to use another person’s space without consent. Suggestions ranged from filing a written complaint with the society’s managing body to taking the matter up with the registrar or even the local police if needed.
