Who Is Nancy Tyagi, The Small Town Girl From UP Who Made It To Cannes In A Gown She Made

The Cannes Film Festival is not just a premier event for cinema but is also intertwined with fashion. It is an equally significant platform for haute couture. Celebrities from across the country arrive at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet dressed in ensembles by top fashion designers, for whom the festival is a platform to showcase their work. Trends are set at the event and photographs are broadcast worldwide and some of our very own celebrities like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Deepika Padukone have served moments that’s for the history books.

However, this year, among the top international celebrities who walked the red carpet at Cannes, there was a young girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Baranwa who fulfilled a huge dream which she didn’t even dare to dream in the first place.

Nancy Tyagi, a budding fashion content creator, was at Cannes and how!

She made her debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in an outfit made entirely from scratch by herself – a breathtaking pink ruffled gown with an impressively long train. This gown is no ordinary gown. It is entirely her creation using 1,000 metres of fabric. It took her a month to stitch it and it weighs 20 kg.

Like most of her outfits, the fabric for this gown too was sourced locally and stitched in a sewing machine that once belonged to her mother.

Nancy’s preliminary days on social media were difficult. Like most content creators, she too faced incessant online trolling for her fashion and dance videos. It is difficult for creators coming from a small town to make it big on social media, especially in a pool where every other creator carries designer bags and wears clothes from high-end brands. Talent isn’t enough in today’s ‘influencer’ market. One has to be authentic, original, engaging and extremely hard-working to make it big on social media.

Nancy Tyagi started gaining a lot of attention after she started her ‘Outfits from Scratch’ series. In some videos, the outfits were born out of her own ideas; they were her own designs. But other videos, which really boosted her online presence, focused on recreating iconic celebrity looks.

From Alia Bhatt’s grey gown for the Red Sea Film Festival featured to Deepika Padukone’s Louis Vuitton look for the Oscars, there didn’t seem to be an outfit that Nancy couldn’t create with her own hands.

Nowadays, brands are partnering with Instagram influencers and taking them to the Cannes Film Festival. There didn’t seem to be a single soul who wasn’t happy with Nancy Tyagi making her way to Cannes because everyone knows, that girl deserves it!
