21-YO Labourer Who Lifted Bricks Cracks NEET After Studying From Broken Smartphone

Sometimes, dreams are born in the most challenging of circumstances. Sarfaraz, a 21-year-old labourer from West Bengal, has proved that no hurdle is big enough when determination takes the lead. Born into a family battling poverty, Sarfaraz’s life revolved around hard labour and financial struggles. But his story is a shining example of resilience.

Sarfaraz grew up in a modest home built under the PM Awas Yojana scheme. To support his family, he worked alongside his father as a daily labourer, carrying heavy bricks from morning till afternoon. He used to pick up 200-400 bricks each day, the weight of them weighing heavily on his dreams.

For him, every day started at 6 am and ended late at night. After hours of gruelling physical work, he would sit down to study on his battered phone with a cracked screen. But despite the many challenges, Sarfaraz refused to give up.

To call their home modest would be an understatement. His mother revealed that their house didn’t even have a proper roof. On cold nights, she would sit with Sarfaraz to ensure he didn’t fall ill while preparing for his exams under the open sky.

Sarfaraz initially wanted to join the National Defence Academy. However, due to financial constraints and an accident right before his interview snipped his chances. But, during the Covid-19 pandemic, he decided to give NEET a shot.

In 2023, Sarfaraz cleared NEET but had to quit dental college due to financial struggles. However, he worked harder for NEET 2024, cleared it and secured admission in Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College in Kolkata. He scored an incredible 677 out of 720, reported Hindustan Times.

When Alakh Pandey, the founder of PhysicsWallah, heard about Sarfaraz’s story, he visited his home to understand the struggles up close. Touched by his perseverance, Pandey gifted Sarfaraz a new phone, offered financial support for his college fees, and extended a loan of Rs 5 lakh.
