In an ideal and equal society, people should get married for the sake of companionship and love. But in the world that we are living in, love and companionship often seem to come secondary. Marriages are taking place for financial security and to fulfill the need to find a wife who would take care of the husband’s family.
Cricketer Kuldeep Yadav, after having been celebrated for the Indian Cricket Team’s victory at the T20 World Cup 2024, is now being slammed for sharing his personal opinions on marriage.

There were allegedly rumours about him wanting to get married to an actress. Rubbishing those rumours, Kuldeep Yadav said, “You’ll hear good news soon, but she won’t be an actress. It’s important that she can care for me and my family,” quoted Moneycontrol.
However, his statement didn’t sit well with several people online. They slammed him for two reasons – first, for disregarding an actress’ ability to become a wife also and second, for reducing a wife’s role to a caretaker. Here’s what people had to say:
So he wants a full time maid who won’t think independently or make a career for herself .
Better hire a maid and pay salary than marry .
Oh yeah wife won’t be paid salary only given some luxuries which she could buy for herself if she is self-dependent . @imkuldeep18— lalitha arwade (mera parivar meri takat) (@lalitaarwade) July 9, 2024

When God distributed men across the globe. He gave Indian women the last scrap from the bottom of the barrel.
It’s 2024, our men still shades on an actress and an adult man needs to marry someone to take care of him and his family. Like everyone is uncared for until Bahu comes. https://t.co/C1RviiUe2s— Paromita Bardoloi (@Paromitabardolo) July 10, 2024

Traditionally, women are expected to dedicate their lives to looking after their families, before and after marriage. A ‘good wife’ is defined as a woman who tends to her husband’s and his family’s needs, often putting aside her own needs. More than looking for a ‘partner’ for themselves, they look for a ‘caretaker’ for their family. But isn’t this entire view patriarchal and detrimental to a woman’s individuality?
