“One Above has a very narrow entry, so as soon as the place caught fire, guests started running. In their bid to escape, a few guests went to the washroom, where most of the dead bodies were recovered.”
The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. and was brought under control by 3 a.m. But cooling operations continued subsequently.
The fire started from the sixth floor of the building which was possibly a makeshift shed on the roof. The compound itself has a number of commercial offices including some media houses and also has a number of restaurants and bars.
Many surviours have shared their account on Twitter. This one user recounts her horror saying that along with the fire there was also a stampede and someone even pushed her.
The #KamalaMills fire started at 1 Above. I was there and barely made it out alive. Some were not so lucky. Praying for the injured and the deceased. It was the scariest thing I have ever survived!

There was a stampede and someone pushed me. People were running over me even as the ceiling above me was collapsing in flames. Still don't know how I got out alive. Some powers were definitely protecting me ?? #kamalamills

Most of the bodies were found near a women’s washroom.
According to a user who was there at 1 Above it was ladies night at the restro-bar, that further worsened the situation.
I was there at #1Above last night at Kamala Mills till 10.45pm. Being a ladies night it was packed with women. Hookahs were seen with coal fire at many tables and smoking all over the place. No fire exit. Only a small lift lobby. Very sad incident #KamlaMillsFire #KamalaMills
