Jaya Kishori, who is a very popular spiritual orator of our generation, recently grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons. She was spotted entering an airport with a customised Dior “Book Tote” worth over Rs 2 lakh. An overwhelming number of people took to social media to criticize her and claimed that she is contradicting her own alleged teachings of non-materialism.
However, Jaya Kishori responded to these criticisms at an interview. Calling herself a “normal girl” who, like everyone else, is earning money to give herself and her loved ones a better life, she stressed that she is not a saint, sadhu or sadhvi.

“I have been clear from day one that I am not a saint, sadhu or sadhvi. I am a normal girl, I live in a normal house, I live with my family. Those who have come to my ‘katha’ know very well that I never say that everything is ‘moh maya‘, don’t earn money or renounce everything. I have not renounced anything, so how can I tell you to do so?” she asked.
She further gave examples of kings who used to wear jewellery and didn’t renounce luxury because they were leaders.
“The true essence of spirituality is knowing you can own things, but things shouldn’t own you,” she added.

Jaya Kishori also mentioned that she has had the bag for years and it’s a customised item. She has certain principles she lives by – like never using leather.
“The bag is a customised bag. There is no leather in it and customised means that you can get it made as per your wish. That is why my name is also written on it. I have never used leather, nor will I ever use it,” she said.
She further clarified, “I was happy even when I didn’t have anything, and now when I can afford a few things by the grace of god, I’m equally happy. Owning things doesn’t make me happy, but it sure allows me to lead a comfortable life.”
