If we were to talk about some of the best easy-breezy love stories to have come out of Bollywood, ‘Jab We Met’ would certainly make the cut. The same is the case with ‘Tamasha’, which easily qualifies as one of the most popular coming-of-age Hindi films. Imtiaz Ali has managed to deliver one cult classic after another and has also left it to his audience to come up with their own theories of what happens next.
One would want fictional characters from his films like Geet and Aditya and Ved and Tara to live happily ever after, despite their differences. After all, many of us still believe in the concept of ‘happily ever after’, don’t we? But Imtiaz Ali thinks differently. In his opinion, Geet and Aditya would definitely separate within a few years of marriage.
At a recent Expresso event hosted by The Indian Express, when Imtiaz was asked about what the future looked like for Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Geet and Shahid Kapoor’s Aditya, he quipped that they would likely be “at a divorce lawyer’s office.”
But when it comes to Tamasha, Imtiaz gives a poignant twist. In the movie, Ranbir Kapoor’s Ved and Deepika Padukone’s Tara ultimately unite, but Imtiaz confessed he would have preferred if they hadn’t ended up together. He envisioned a scenario where Ved continued to idolize Tara as his muse from afar, while she secretly attended his shows.
“You know the ideal ending of Tamasha would have been if they hadn’t gotten together but he would have still idolized her as his muse. I wish that was the ending actually but that thought came a little late so in that scenario they would be separate and she would always be watching his shows but not telling him that she had come for it,” he said.
This started a massive debate on social media and several people weighed in on the subject. Here’s how they responded to Imtiaz Ali’s musings:
Geet and Aditya were a perfect couple as geet became quite matured and grounded after staying alone for 9 months, so they would have survived. But Ved definitely needed years of therapy instead of a relationship with tara.

Geet-Aditya saw each other at their worst and helped each other in their lows, Geet in the end became more mature and Aditya became more lively, don’t u dare ruin a perfect couple like them imtiaz ? pic.twitter.com/IHlP5vxJy9

Geet and Aditya would have survived. Ved and Tara are disaster as a couple. Infact, Ved should take years of therapy before dating anyone.

Geet toh 9 mahine akele rehne ke baad thodi practical aur samajhdaar ho gayi thi. So Aditya and Geet would have survived.
And Ved needed therapy not a relationship.— Prachi Shah (@PrachiieS) July 7, 2024
Truth. As much as believe in love and indisputable commitment and devotion to the one you love as a poet…I know in real life, there are never two people like that in a relationship. There is definitely one.

really apt, the idea of “ved and tara” was good but that’s all it was, in reality they’d be toxic asf, geet and aditya might just work tho

Their relationship blossoms during a tumultuous journey, which can create a strong bond. However, once they return to their regular lives, external pressures and differing social backgrounds would affect their relationship.

“JabWeMet” is most positive story line evr . If they don’t live happily ever after then who will be spared !
There is this age old adage ; in best love stories are tragedies. But that’s a attack on Human frailties.
As we are ,we cannot sustain flame of love for long.

Do you agree with what Imtiaz has to say?
