While many in India might find the idea surprising, there’s a centuries-old tradition in parts of Himachal Pradesh where two brothers marry the same woman, and it’s not only accepted but also respected in their communities.
This unique custom, known as Jodidar Pratha, is followed by the Hati community in the Shillai region of Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district and also in Jaunsar-Bawar in Uttarakhand. The reason behind this age-old tradition is both practical and cultural. It helps prevent the division of land and property within families, especially in poor households. In some cases, up to five brothers have shared a wife.
Recently, this tradition made national headlines after two brothers from the Thindo family in Shillai village married the same woman.
According to News18, Pradeep Negi and Kapil Negi have married the same woman – Sunita from Kunhat village. They clarified that their marriage was in no way forced, but consensual. Both their families supported the union.
Despite being abused on social media, they aren’t bothered by it.
“Some people are abusing us on social media, but it doesn’t matter to me. I will continue to promote our culture and customs. People who know nothing about our traditions are also trying to give their opinion. This marriage happened with the consent of all of us, and both our family and society are happy. The purpose of this marriage is simply to stay together and maintain mutual love. We request people not to make negative remarks, we have our own lives, and we are happy in them,” said Pradeep.
Kapil added, “We didn’t marry to be in the news. In many families, two brothers marry the same woman, but our marriage became a topic of discussion only after it was reported in the media.”
At a time when society is quick to judge anything that doesn’t fit into the mainstream narrative, this story is a reminder that customs vary widely across India. What might seem shocking to one person could be completely normal to another.
