Employee Applies For Leave To Attend Cousin’s Wedding, Manager Asks For Wedding Card As Proof

In every company, each employee is entitled to a certain number of leaves – be it casual or privileged leave. It is kind of a given that they will be able to utilize those leaves whenever they want. However, some workplaces, especially managers and bosses, make it extremely hard for employees to ask for leaves. Asking for leaves is frowned upon and working constantly without taking a break is glorified in our country. Here’s an example.

A user took to Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace subreddit to share how he applied for 8 days of leave for the month of February a couple of months in advance. He had a cousin’s wedding to attend. The manager asked him to email the wedding card as “proof”. Who does that?

“I recently applied 8 leaves for my cousin’s marriage that is in feb. I was asked the reason for that I told my manager. Now he’s asking for a proof and said write an email to the upper management with attached wedding card. I don’t have the card yet. These are my privileged leaves that I am entitled for, I don’t get it why he’s asking for the proof even after telling him way before notice. What should I do I don’t wanna give him any proof whatsoever, i guess telling the reason was more than enough on my part,” he posted on Reddit.

Several people online found this very strange. Many of them asked him to not send proof of the wedding, while others asked him to just make a fake wedding card on an image editing app. Have a look at some of the responses here:

If employees are given a certain number of leaves, shouldn’t the company just allow them to take the leaves as they wish?
