We are already aware of how artificial intelligence is taking over jobs across industries. AI is taking over tasks that were once done by humans. AI can make art, fill in for customer service executives, replace teachers in a classroom, and put writers out of business. But what we didn’t expect was to see AI being used as a replacement for humans when it came down to dating.
Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd in an interview revealed how dating apps could use AI in a way so as to make people’s AI dating concierge talk to other people’s AI dating concierge to weed out the crowd and find suitable matches.

“You could in the near future be talking to your AI dating concierge and you could share your insecurities: ‘I just came out of a relationship,’ ‘I have commitment issues’. It could help you train yourself into a better way of thinking about yourself. And then it could give you productive tips for communicating with other people. If you want to get really out there, there’s a world where your dating concierge could go and date for you with other dating concierge. Then you don’t have to talk to 600 people,” she said.
Basically, an AI version of you would be talking to the AI version of another person on the dating app.
However, this arrangement sounded very familiar to desi people because, for decades, our mothers have been doing this job for us. We don’t need AI as we have ‘Aai’ (mother) who is responsible for finding matches for us. Bumble’s vision for the future is India’s entire arranged marriage setup.
Here’s how people responded to Whitney Wolfe Herd’s statement:
Your आई will meet other people's आई and recommend the best matches for you. https://t.co/19hW1AQSeL

A ruthless self-taught dating machine who weaponizes your biodata to whittle down matches, raising concerns over privacy and consent? Congrats, you've invented the Indian mom. https://t.co/vOXRD7oGhv

As opposed to Indian system where your Aai talks to other people’s Aai and recommend best matches for you to meet https://t.co/hwUqWKuqBW

Bumble founder Herd suggests in near future AI will select matches and set up dates for us.
That's actually the older way how "AAI" system works in India, mothers taking to each other, first meeting prospective bride/ groom and then they get marriedhttps://t.co/SAvlxeyfT9

Why stop there? Have the AI also do the engagement, children, divorce, golden years reconciliation… we can really get efficient by taking the human out of the loop. https://t.co/4epZ85v2F9

startup idea: a dating app that presents itself to women as an AI matchmaker but actually her parents are manually picking all her matches https://t.co/3bkDTJqdG0

However, isn’t it extremely sad and ‘Black Mirror’-like to have AI versions of us date, instead of having the natural human experience of getting to know new people and playing the field?
