Redditor Humbled After Learning About Autorickshaw Driver’s 14 To 16-Hour Work Day, Shares Story

We often complain about the smallest things in life – bad traffic, late food deliveries, office deadlines. But for many people around us, even the things we call “basic” are a luxury. While we fuss over comfort, there are countless others fighting quietly every single day just so their families can survive.

A viral Reddit post captured this contrast perfectly. Shared by user Specialist_Meaning73 on r/india, it narrates a late-night auto ride in Gujarat that turned into an unforgettable conversation.

The passenger had booked an auto after 11 PM, exhausted from work. The driver, a man in his late 50s with “a thin frame and tired eyes,” started chatting with him. At first, it was just small talk about traffic and weather, but soon the conversation revealed the harsh reality of his life.

When asked if he always drove so late, the driver laughed, not happily, but in a way that said he had no choice.

“Bhaiya, do betiyan hain. Ek ke liye coaching fees deni hai, doosri ke school ka kharcha. Din mein 700–800 banta hai, usmein se aadha toh gas aur kiraya chala jaata hai. Raat ko chalata hoon taaki unki padhai na ruk jaye,” he shared.

The Redditor wrote how those words hit him hard. While he was grumbling about his corporate job, this man was working 14–16 hours a day to make sure his daughters didn’t have to give up on their education.

Then came the line that stayed with him: “Gareeb aadmi sapne nahi dekhta apne liye, sirf apne bachon ke liye. Mere liye toh bas itna hai ki mujhe kal bhi chalane ki taaqat mile.”

By the time he reached home, the passenger didn’t even feel like stepping out of the auto. He tried to give the driver some extra money. The man refused at first, but eventually accepted it with folded hands, saying, “Aapko bhi khuda taaqat de.”

“Maybe the biggest privilege we have isn’t money or English-speaking jobs. It’s the fact that we are allowed to dream for ourselves. And I’ll never forget that one line from him: ‘Gareeb aadmi sapne nahi dekhta apne liye’,” the user wrote.
