The problem with today’s times is that very well-made and well-written films are written off by film critics and paid PR while absolutely nonsense movies continue to mint money at the box office. Good films are not even given a chance, as many of them are not released at the theatres. If only the entire industry came together to promote and support each other’s work, then the culture of watching different kinds of films at the theatres would continue to thrive.
Vikrant Massey starrer ’12th Fail’, an incredible film based on the life of IPS Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, has earned the appreciation of the country and is continuously doing well at the box office. Massey earned a Filmfare award too this year for his performance in the film.

The film was made by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and he had full conviction on the film. However, his wife and film critic Anupama Chopra had advised him against releasing the film at the theatres because she believed nobody would watch it. She asked him to release the film on OTT platforms instead.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently revealed:
“When we were releasing this film, I was told by everyone, including my dearest wife, to put it out on OTT. She said, ‘Nobody will go to see Vinod. Teri film aur Vikrant ki film ko dekhne koi nahin jayega (laughs). I would like to tell this clearly today in front of everyone. (She said) ‘Koi nahin jayega. Tujhe pata nahin hai, tu filmo ke saath connected nahin hai. Tujhe pata nahin hai, jayega hi nahin koi.’ And there are these agencies who write, ‘Rs. 2 lakhs ki opening’, ‘Rs. 30 lakhs ka lifetime business’. Mujhe dara diya sabne. But still, I believed in the film, so we put in our own money to publicize it. And it opened very small. But that’s okay. And look at where we are,” quoted Bollywood Hungama.
This revelation of the filmmaker grabbed the attention of several people online, including actor Kangana Ranaut, who slammed Anupama Chopra for not supporting her husband even for a film that is brilliant.
“Vidhu sir’s wife @anupamachopra is a disgrace in the name of film journalist, she is not only xenophobic but also deeply jealous and insecure of younger and intelligent women, no wonder she is jealous of her own husband, on whose name and wealth she built her website and other small businesses, got her Bollywood wife card to flaunt in filmi parties and ganged up with gossip gangs of Bollywood against genuine talent and good films,” she wrote on social media.

Others questioned Anupama Chopra’s credibility as a film critic and asked people to not take her suggestions seriously. Here’s what some have been saying:
That’s how some critics are. Even to their family members!
They can’t judge films like 12th fail and they can’t judge films like #Animal too!

#AnupamaChopra is as good as predicting success of any movie as I am in speaking Chinese.
I know the language is called Mandarin. That’s the point.
Good on you @VVCFilms to not listen to her. Someone could be great personally but bad professionally. Key is to keep them separate. https://t.co/uOQ5hpxhiR— Aayur Kaul (@aayurkaul) February 4, 2024
If this is true then God save this industry from movies critics?? kinda agree with vanga when he called these guys illiterate and have zero sense about movies and they call themselves intellectual ? https://t.co/XqoDirl5TJ

Shows the level of disconnect and absolute cluelessness of these so called "critics" to what the audiences actually want to see
Also so much for a supportive wife ? https://t.co/l3P2OZ48Vz

Anupama Chopra took to social media too to share that she had spoken against releasing the film at the theatres, but thanked her husband’s commitment and conviction on doing otherwise.
“Like everyone else, I asked, who will pay to see this in theatres. Thankfully he is one of those, ek baar jo maine commitment kar di Uske baad main apni bhi nahi sunta types ? He marches to the beat of a different drummer – basically his own conviction! And here we are, celebrating 100 days of the film in theatres even when it’s available on OTT. As William Goldman famously said, in the movie business ‘Nobody knows anything’ and that is the magic of the movies!” she wrote.

We’re glad that Vidhu Vinod Chopra made the decision to release the film as it did!
